Who we are
BTBC Titans is a community dragon boat club in Boston and the operating name of Boston Taiwanese Boat Club, Inc., a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2018.
A club, a crew, a community
Established in 2018, we are a nonprofit dragon boat club promoting the sport and its community in the greater Boston area.
On the water we chase race pace. Off the water we run socials, volunteer locally, and grow the paddling community that makes it all possible.
The boat is open to everyone. We welcome paddlers of every level and every background, from first stroke to festival podium, and no experience is needed to start.
What is dragon boating?
Twenty paddlers, one drummer, one steersperson — dragon boating is the ultimate team sport, and it rewards timing and grit over size and strength.
Paddlers sit in pairs along a long, narrow boat dressed with a dragon's head and tail. The drummer at the front sets the stroke rate, and the steersperson at the back guides the boat with a long oar. A crew is only as fast as its timing: every blade has to catch the water together.
The sport grew out of festivals in southern China more than two thousand years ago. Today it is raced around the world, and the Titans race at festivals across New England and beyond.
Why we race as BTBC Titans
Our legal name is Boston Taiwanese Boat Club, Inc., and it hasn't changed. We race as BTBC Titans because paddlers kept telling us they assumed "Taiwanese" meant the club was only for people of Taiwanese heritage, and so they never came to a practice — the opposite of what we are here to do.
BTBC keeps our initials. Titans makes it unmistakable that the boat is open to everyone in Boston. Same club, same roots, a name that invites the whole city in.
